CenterPoint Energy plans to install a network of 100 weather stations across its 12-county service territory in the Greater Houston area before hurricane season kicks off on June 1, the company announced. The weather stations are expected to help the Houston-area electric utility better forecast severe weather and more precisely distribute resources. CenterPoint said it would be the first investor-owned utility in Texas to establish its own weather station network. CenterPoint is also preparing its electrical infrastructure for hurricane season. By June, the company has said it plans to install 25,000 stronger, more storm-resilient poles; trim trees near 4,000 miles of power lines and bury 400 miles of power lines.

The nearly 2,700-mile Keystone oil pipeline was shut down April 8 after it ruptured in North Dakota, halting the flow of millions of gallons of crude oil from Canada to refineries in the United States and potentially leading to higher gasoline prices. South Bow, a liquid pipeline business that manages the pipeline, said it shut down the pipeline after control center leak detection systems detected a pressure drop in the system. The company estimated that 3,500 barrels of oil were released and said the spill was confined to an agricultural field in a rural area, about 60 miles southwest of Fargo.

The FBI and Lacey Police Department say they are treating a fire set to a Tesla charging station outside of Washington's capital as an incident of domestic terrorism. On the morning of April 8, the Lacey Police Department received several reports of an explosion in a commercial district of the city. When officers arrived at the South Sound Center, they noticed "significant" damage to a Tesla charging station near a Target store. "The preliminary investigation gave officers reason to believe that this was most likely an intentional criminal act and not an accident of malfunction," the Lacey police chief said. Meanwhile, at least five people have been federally charged in connection with arsons to Tesla vehicles and facilities since March.

The helicopter tour company whose sightseeing chopper plunged into the Hudson River on April 10 must stop operations immediately, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on April 14. The suspension of the air carrier certificate comes after an employee at the company who voluntarily agreed to stop flights was fired, according to a letter from the Chief Counsel of the FAA. New York Helicopter Tours was previously involved in two safety incidents investigated by federal aviation authorities.

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency said that Mexico must stop the flow of billions of gallons of sewage and toxic chemicals from Tijuana that has polluted the Pacific Ocean off neighboring Southern California, closing beaches, and sickening Navy SEALs who train in the water. Lee Zeldin made the demand during an Earth Day trip to the California-Mexico border, where he toured a plant in San Diego County that treats the sewage as a secondary facility and flew along the frontier to see the Tijuana River.

Communities along the freshwater Mississippi River are facing a growing threat from an intrusion of saltwater moving the wrong way up the river from the Gulf of Mexico. It has wreaked havoc on public drinking water infrastructure for thousands of people, decimated a once-thriving local seafood industry, and has raised concerns about the future safety of New Orleans' drinking water. A third-generation oysterman and a local councilman in Plaquemines Parish says saltwater intrusion issues used to only happen once a decade, but he says it has occurred the last three summers in a row, and now the parish is gearing up for it to potentially happen again.

A Northern Michigan ice storm cut power to some 90,000 area residents and took down the tower of Macdonald Garber Broadcasting Top 40 WKHQ (106 KHQ)/Charlevoix-Traverse City. The VP of programming said, “We’re up to six towers down due in the area to the ice storm, two of which are ours.” In addition to the loss of WKHQ’s tower, the tower of AC sister WLXT (Lite 96.3) was discovered lying on the ground. “They appear to have buckled under the weight of the ice, which causes them to break somewhere in the middle and collapse on themselves,” the spokesman said.

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is urging internet and cybersecurity service providers to secure their networks against an evasive threat technique known as "fast flux.” Fast flux is a domain-based, dynamic resolution technique that "rapidly changes the DNS (Domain Name System) records associated with a single domain," according to a joint advisory released by CISA, FBI, and NSA on April 3. Malicious actors have been observed leveraging the national security threat against internet security providers (ISPs), cybersecurity service providers, and Protective Domain Name System (PDNS) providers, making networks vulnerable to phishing attacks, command and control of botnets, and data exfiltration.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued a Financial Trend Analysis focused on patterns and trends identified in Bank Secrecy Act data linked to fentanyl-related illicit finance. Between January and December 2024, financial institutions filed 1,246 BSA reports that identified suspected fentanyl-related activity amounting to approximately $1.4 billion in suspicious transactions.  The reported financial activity highlighted various aspects of the illicit fentanyl supply chain—including precursor chemical procurement, fentanyl trafficking, and fentanyl-linked money laundering—that have touchpoints across the U.S. financial sector.

Financial institutions should be on alert for a scam that combines social engineering, previously undocumented malware, and mobile phones’ near-field communication (NFC) capabilities to compromise payment cards, researchers at cybersecurity firm Cleafy said. The fraudsters target Android devices with “a series of well-orchestrated steps” that allow them to steal money from individual victims. The malware, which Cleafy is calling SuperCard X, overlaps with malicious code first reported by researchers at ESET in 2024. The abuse of NFC technology — when a device recognizes a nearby item like a payment card — is new, Cleafy says.

The U.S. Commerce Department said it is opening a probe into national security impacts of imports of medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks and related parts into the United States. The "Section 232" investigation could form the basis of grounds to impose new tariffs on work trucks, buses, vans, and other larger vehicles. A study released in January said imports of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles from Mexico have tripled since 2019. The Commerce Department is seeking public comment by mid-May on the extent to which domestic production of trucks and truck parts can meet domestic demand and the concentration of U.S. imports of trucks and truck parts from a small number of suppliers. It also wants comments on the impacts on prices "due to foreign unfair trade practices and state-sponsored overproduction".

A third bomb threat in just over three months has again disrupted operations at the Briggs & Stratton manufacturing plant on Zell Miller Parkway in Statesboro, Georgia. The Bulloch County Sheriff's Office Captain confirmed that an arrest has been made in connection to one of the earlier threats, while investigations into the other two remain active. The plant has been the target of three separate bomb threats in 2025, occurring on January 29, March 27, and most recently on April 30.
